I can think of one that happened just recently. About a month ago, I received a message from the assistant athletic director at the University of South Florida. He had heard that I sing the National Anthem for sports events and wanted to know if I could sing for an upcoming lacrosse match, which was to be held at the university’s impressive sports complex. Initially, I was thrilled at the opportunity, and after checking my calendar, we agreed on a date that worked for both of us. Here’s the unusual part. This was the first time I had sung for a Division 1 event, a significant milestone for any performer, especially one who is passionate about music. Plus, I had never seen a lacrosse match, a sport that seemed both exciting and fast-paced, and I was curious about the atmosphere it would create. And to add to the uniqueness, I had never sung for a women’s athletic event before, which felt empowering and inspiring in its own right. As the day approached, I practiced my rendition, hoping to deliver a performance that would resonate with both the players and the audience. As things turned out, it was a beautiful day, with the sun shining brightly and a gentle breeze in the air, and the crowd was very kind after I sang, expressing their appreciation with warm applause. Thank you to the University of South Florida for this unforgettable experience!
